What is the origin of the name of the British sponge pudding called "Spotted Dick"?

Actually "Spotted Dick" is more a steamed fruit pudding, made with suet and filled with jam, and served with a custard sauce, here in Canada we have a native Newfoundland dish similar called "Figgy Duff" made similarly but with molasses, you can make it quite easily with a simple friutcake mix, and some added eggs and then rolling some raspberry jam in the middle, steaming it in a roast pan wrapped in foil and a piece of either parachment or saran wrap, and if you not into making custard now most stores sell a tinned English style one in the department were they sell puddings.

And that is the original name, it is from the early 1800's before Queen Victoria took the throne in 1845.
