Of What Origin Is The Last Name Kinsella?

I'm doing a heritage project for Social Studies. I found out that my great grandma was not originally an O' Schanusy but a Kinsella. Would her family have come from Ireland too?

Of What Origin Is The Last Name Kinsella?
http://www.google.com/search?q=Kinsella%26amp;...

It looks to be Irish.
Reply:According to SurnameDB.com, Kinsella is an Irish Gaelic surname from the nickname now spelled "Cinnsealach," which means proud. In Ireland there was a district called the Kinsellaghs, now part of the modern Co. Wexford, and the Kinsella surname is common in that part of Leinster
Reply:Yep, it's Irish! Doesn't really sound like it would be, does it? But it is! I've always thought it was a pretty cool name. =)

What is the origin of the name Ouija as it relates to the infamous boards of the same name?

There are many theories, none of which are confirmed. Some say it is a conjunction of the french "oui" (yes) and the german ja (also yes). Another is that it came to the inventor of the board during a seance and it is an Egyptian word that means "good luck".

What is the origin of the name Ouija as it relates to the infamous boards of the same name?
There are several theories about the origin of the term "Ouija". According to one of these, the word is derived from the French "oui" (for "yes") and the German "ja" (also for "yes"). An alternative story suggests that the name was revealed to inventor Charles Kennard during a Ouija s茅ance and was claimed to be an Ancient Egyptian word meaning "good luck." It has also been suggested that the word was inspired by the name of the Moroccan city Oujda. Despite its common usage, "Ouija" is a registered trademark[citation needed] (but the term "Ouija Board" has been abandoned as a registered trademark[citation needed]).
Reply: It is yes and yes in French and German. Ja is yes, and so is we, spelt the French way that I don't know how to spell! I know how to spell no in French, it is Non.
Reply:It means the "yes yes" board, or the "answer board". Its yes in French and German.
Reply:It is the combination of the words for yes in French and in German

What is the ethnic origin of the last name BELLENIE?

The last name sounds Italian to me, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm very curious as it has to do with a friend of mine. Thanks for the help!

What is the ethnic origin of the last name BELLENIE?
Mostly Italian.

There is a famous Italian who lived in Venezia %26lt;Venice%26gt; by the name of Bellenie. He created a drink containing champagne and peaches ... secret recipe ... it cost a fortune to get the authenitic drink in Venezia ... but you can get a good one anywhere in Venice.

Sadly, you can't get a "Bellenie" at the new Los Vegus Venitian Resort ... but you can cross the strip and go to Magiano's and get a "Bellenie" there.
Reply:The Mormons have a bunch of them in England. Here is one;

ELIZABETH BELLENIE - International Genealogical Index / BI

Gender: Female Christening: 13 AUG 1727 St Mary Whitechapel, Stepney, London, England

They don't have any Italian ones. That isn't proof here are none; the 1700 ones may have come over from Italy and stayed, opening Italian restaurants to introduce the stolid English to the joys of tomatos, garlic and basil.

Reply:Some of my "quick tricks" to survey a name-

family files at www.rootsweb.com

I see over 2300 entries for the name, and looks like it has been in the US since the early 1800's.

Another trick (if you ARE a US resident) is www.familysearch.org and click on search, then census. They have a nationwide (transcribed) index to the 1880 census. Pick 1880, use the surname, then let it pull up what it finds. NOW, I scan those findings for someone old, and male (married females won't work, since their birth name is different). Click to look at some of those older persons... since the entry for that person will show his place of birth AND that of his parents.

Generally, those of us here who have "worked" our families, have found that place of origin for a surname is very unreliable. It can show up in many places. What IS reliable, is getting into the addiction of actually tracing your personal ancestry. You eventually will find the person who is the "immigrant"... and among the research, it should show his/her place of birth.
Reply:Names haven't nationalities. Nationality refers to what nation one is a citizen of.

Genealogy is generally about the research and documentation of one's dead ancestors. Categorize your question in the appropriate category - you will receive better and more relevant answers.
Reply:The etymology of that word is found in those "Man" enough to pursue it...( maybe he is related to Robin?)

What is the origin of the name Biewald?

I would really like to know.

What is the origin of the name Biewald?
Sounds German considering that the last four letters "wald" means "forest" in German (pronouced VALD).

Back in the old days, people got their last names because of a certain attribute they had or of their profession. Someone whose last name is "Schlosser" may mean that his ancestor was a tool-maker (Schlosser means either tool or toolman).
Reply:Definitely German, possibly a place name. There is a hotel and a restaurant with that name in Friedland.

What is the origin of the Ottawa Senators name and logo?

I know that they are called the Senators because they are paying homage to the original Senators but why did they have that name?

Also why is their logo a Roman soldier and their mascot a lion?

It is just something i have always wondered since I began watching hockey.

What is the origin of the Ottawa Senators name and logo?
I think because Ottawa is the capital of Canada. Like the old Washington Senators baseball team. Both have Senators working in town?
Reply:senator is derive from old rome so the soldier they fought the lions in the ring .
Reply:I think enough people have picked up on the name -- Original Ottawa Senators (1893-1934) and the Canadian Senate. The logo was assigned by the league to replace the team's desired Peace Tower logo (see; http://www.sportslogos.net/logo.php?lo=6... ) Note the old Washington Senators started in 1901 and copied the name of the hockey team.

The NHL figured Americans, being too busy shooting each other and with a tendency to be a LITTLE xenophobic, wouldn't understand what a peacetower is.

This is a Peace Tower: http://www.galenfrysinger.com/americas/o...
Reply:I would guess that the Legionnaire logo is due to fact that an old Roman man in a toga is a bad hockey logo.
Reply:They have that name because Ottawa is the capital of Canada... so Senators... government.. you get the picture.

Logo is a Roman Soldier becuase that is usually associated with ancient Roman Senators who often fought in the Roman legions. It's a stretch, but it's a hell of alot more exciting logo than a Canadian MP on a jersey.

Mascot is a lion because Canadian government has British roots, and the British national animal is a lion... so it kinda sticks.

lol lots to do with Canadian Federal Government, because.. as I've said above.. it is the capital of the country.

And yes they were named the Senators, because when Canada's governor general Lord Stanley of Preston gave the dominion of CAnada a cup for the champions of hockey, the Senators were one of the first teams ever competing for it. Lots of hockey history out there in Ottawa.
Reply:Right, the name Senators is to pay respect to the original Ottawa Senators the nickname of the hockey club that represented Ottawa from 1892-1933 and was one of the founding members of the NHL in 1917. They were also known as The Silver Seven and the Ottawa Hockey Club winning 10 Stanley Cups. The name refers to Ottawa being Canada's National Capital - the two house of government being the House of Commons and the Senate (better than the Ottawa Commoners I suppose) The Roman Legionnaire I believe he is called, is in reference to the origin of the Senate being in Rome. The original emblem was a large O which might look to some as a Zero. Just having a letter on the jersey is kind of old school so they went with the Roman I guess. The lion is probably in reference to the way that enemies were thrown to the lions in the Roman Collisseum.
Reply:What the dude said above and that they basically took it from the team in Ottawa back in the pre-NHL days

What is the origin of the following last Name- Luckeydoo?

It does not give a meaning. The origin and meaning of a name is not important in genealogy as the same surname can come from many different countries. The best way to know your heritage is to trace your family starting with your parents and work back. Anytime you wish to do this there are lots of people on this board that can give you some great ideas. Just ask.

Rootsweb(free site) has 193 entries in family trees for Batteiger. Now, don't take everything as fact what you see in family trees on websites as most is not documented or poorly documented. Even if you see the same information by many different submitters, a lot of copying is being done. All too frequently people are copying errors.

Put Rootsweb in your search engine and then put Batteiger in the World Connect Block. If you see anything that interest you, you can probe a name and it will take you to a screen with the name and email address of the submitter. Some submitters might not know anything as the Batteiger they have just might be someone who married into their family, but no doubt some will.

What is the origin of the last name Wingfield?

I am trying to find out the ethnicity of someone by that last name.

What is the origin of the last name Wingfield?
http://www.wingfield.org/ maybe useful. It says

Most Wingfields are descended for the prominent Saxon family that was in Suffolk, England before the Norman Conquest in 1066. The village of Wingfield is shown in the Doomsday Book of 1086. Their influence spread throughout England. Many were knights, two of whom were Knights of the Garter. They were advisors to kings and one was the Chief of Staff to the Black Prince. Some married royal blood and several were Lords of the Manor in a number of areas of England. A Wingfield was the first president of the Jamestown Colony. The inventor of tennis was Walter Wingfield. Another family of Wingfields stem from Derbyshire, England, where in mediaeval times some of them were armigerous (i.e. had a coat of arms) and are today traceable (through the Wingfield Family Society). Hundreds of Wingfields trek back to England to see historical sites, such as the 14th century Wingfield Castle.
Reply:Surname: Wingfield

Recorded as Winfield and Wingfield, is English. It is of locational origin from any of the various places now called Wingfield in Bedfordshire, Derbyshire and Suffolk. Wingfield in Bedfordshire, first recorded as "Winfeld" in circa 1200 may be derived from the Olde English "wince" a "reel or pulley" or it may be a bird name from the Olde English for lapwing "(hleap) wince", with "feld", meadow. Wingfield in North Derbyshire was first recorded as "Wynnefeld" in 1002 and derives from the Olde English "winn", "meadow" plus "feld", hence "meadow or grazing ground". Wingfield in Suffolk was first recorded as "Wingefeld" in circa 1035 and derives from the Olde English meaning "the feld of the people of Wiga" or its first element may be a derivative of the Olde English "weoh", "pagan temple". Early examples of the surname recording include Dorothy Winfield who was christened on February 25th 1637 at St. Bride's Fleet Street, and John Wingfield who was christened at St James Clerkenwell, on July 15th 1804, both in the city of London. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Nicholas de Wynefeld. This was dated 1228, in the Curia Regis Rolls, during the reign of King Henry 111rd, 1216 - 1272.

What is the origin of the Austrian family name Schikelgruber?

What is the origin of the Austrian family name Schikelgruber?
Schickel is a type of small potato. Gruber is one who digs. Presumably Hitler had some ancestor who was a farmer known for growing potatoes. Had Alois not changed his name, it seems extremely unlikely Germans would have run around screaming, with a straight face, "Heil Schickelgruber!"
Reply:I'm sure you are aware Schikelgruber was Adolf Hitler's original family name, I cannot find it's origin.

Alois Hitler, Adolf Hitler's father, was born named Alois Heiler, and prior to the last name Heiler being used, Hitler's grandfather's last name was Schikelgruber.

What is the origin of the name facial hair style, soul patch?
The soul patch is a small patch of facial hair just below the lower lip and above the chin. It is also known as an Attilio, royale, scruff, imp茅riale, liptee, cookie duster, womb-broom, zif, ball-tickler, cadillac, mouche (which is French for fly) or flavor-saver. Reply:Looking on Ancestry.com the name seems to be centered in the Carolinas in the census data. I do see a family in Scotland for the 1841 Scottish census. I have also seen families with members born in Ireland.

It may be Scots-Irish, but that is speculation. I was not able to follow families from census to census, so it seems to be a spelling variation of something else, perhaps Kasy or Casey. Some of the families have Mc in front of the name, another indication that it might be Scots-Irish.

Without being able to trace a family through the census years, it is difficult to give any more definitive answer.

Can anyone tell me the origin and meaning of the name Katrice?

I've heard lots of different explanations but it would be nice to know exactly what it means? Is it common in a different culture?

Can anyone tell me the origin and meaning of the name Katrice?
I strongly suspect that your name is constructed from Katrina (a form of Catherine) and the French female ending "-rice".
Reply:Check these out!
Reply:Katrice: "One who cashes welfare checks"
Reply:I can not give you the meaning, however it might be a derivative of Katharine or Patrica.

It is found as a forename (first or middle) for girls for over 200 years in genealogical records and many women named Katrice were from, or had parents or grandparents from Germany and Austria.

I have found this name from many areas including Italy and even in Hawaii (in the 1800s). This lady was of Japanese parentage. I have also found many instances of Katrice existing today throughout the US.

It matters not what the name means to others, or to history, it is what it means to those who wear it that is what counts.

ADDED: I highly doubt that Katrice is of Scandinavian origin because of the lack of findings in that area of the world (not any I could find), but if it were true, the meaning would be more "path" than road. A person who travels their own path, or a person who guides others to the correct path.
Reply:It is a made-up name like someone took Katrina and Patrice

Does anybody know the roots or origin of the last name Caustrita?

Its not a hispanic even though my family and I are hispanic.any input would be greatly appricieated.

Does anybody know the roots or origin of the last name Caustrita?
I responded to the same question the other day.. and offered you direct information concerning the name being found in Mexican records.

Most times, if not all.. you CAN document where a name is associated, by verification of your paternal lineage (since surnames come through the father/grandfather/etc). Genealogy ALWAYS works with, and uses valid records. Surname etymology (origin of a name) is a different process, and is not always as scientific or provable. Etymology, by the very nature, requires finding records as well, that are linked to the name.. but the name CAN predate any records.

One thing you HAVE to be aware of.. is that many names become altered along the line. An example is when a foreign person moves from place a to place b, with a certain name. For one reason or another, the name becomes entered in the records by some variation (due to mispronounced, or other reasons). As time passes.. the variation becomes the accepted version of the name. The actual "origin' of the name as later known, is the point where the change happened. Unless you have researched.. then you don't always see the alternation, thus you have no way to know the first version.

I don't know if anyone has traced your actual family members back, but you already know you are Hispanic, and I found the name present in Mexico. When you see the "ita" ending, this is common to many Spanish origin names. Names coming from Spain are found all over the world, due to much Spanish exploration.

But you also would be aware that in Mexico, many persons of Spanish descent will have married with persons who are Native to Mexico. Just to explain..a man with a Spanish name can easily have married a woman with native Mexican (or anywhere) ancestry. Family traditions of Native ancestry would be accurate.. but that is not going to be obvious, if using a surname as a guide. For this, you HAVE to work with either regular genealogy sources, or the other option would be dna testing.

The only way you will have any kind of RELIABLE answer is by finding where your paternal ancestry comes from.

What is the origin of the name of the Boston Celtics? why is it pronounced with a soft C?

as we all know, if you are Irish you are considered Celtic, but in that form its always said with a hard C sounding like Keltic. What is the origin of the word in use with the NBA team??

What is the origin of the name of the Boston Celtics? why is it pronounced with a soft C?
from the NBA's website:

The legend of the naming of the team dates back to when the franchise was formed in the summer of 1946. Team founder Walter Brown was an avid hockey man who just happened to fall in love with the sport of basketball. With professional hockey in place, the perceptive Brown could now fill the empty seats at his famous Boston Garden with another winter sport team - professional basketball.

The name seemingly grew out of a conversation between Brown and Howie McHugh, a member of the Garden's publicity staff and the man assigned to handle the basketball entity. Both men suggested several nicknames, including Whirlwinds, Unicorns and Olympics.

But it was Brown, who suddenly exclaimed, "Wait, I've got it - the Celtics. We'll call them the Boston Celtics!" Brown excitedly went on, "The name has a great basketball tradition from the old Original Celtics in New York. And, Boston is full of Irishmen. We'll put them in green uniforms and call them the Boston Celtics!"

McHugh tried in vain to talk with, negotiate and dissuade Brown not to use the name Celtics, but Brown's mind had clearly reached a final decision and that would be the end of that conversation.
Reply:well, there is a football (soccer) team in glasgow scotland called "celtic" and it is pronounced with the soft c. so they have it that way over there sometimes too.

Can anybody tell me from which country the name or surname, Vango originates?

Does anybody know the origin of this name?
I had a look by Googling 'Vango' and could find nothing that gave me a clue. I suspect it is a name that has changed spelling over the years. Ancestry.com shows lots in the USA and the UK but they don't have many records from elsewhere.
Reply:This may well be an Americanized version of VanGough or Van Goch !

But it is also quite possible that this explains it

Surname: Vango

This is an extraordinary surname. It has to be described as English, because it has been well recorded in the surviving church registers of the diocese of Greater London, and other English places, since at least the begining of the18th century, nearly three hundred years ago. Furthermore it has retained its original spelling with just occasional lapses into variants such as Vanjo and Vangoe, although these do not seem to have lasted more than one generation. The first known recording is that of Isaac Vango. He appears regularly in the London church registers from May 20th 1711, when he married at St Dunstans in the East, Stepney, for the next twenty years, and it maybe that he is literally 'the father' of the Vango's. The name itself does not appear in any known directory, which suggests that either it is very rare, which it is, or more likely it is a variant form of some other (unidentified) surname. The church of St Dunstans may offer a clue. This was the church of the refugees, at a time when many protestants were fleeing the continent to avoid catholic persecution. Most came from France but some from Germany. Another possible clue is the name Van Goch. Is Vango an 'English' spelling of Van Goch? We dont know, but it was a time when many Dutch came to England.

The name, and origin of the airbourne seed that is totally round, white fluff that children make wishes on.?

It is not a dandelion seed, for this 'pod' has no stem. For the life of me I have no idea what it is called or from what plant it comes from. I live in Canada, so its origin must be from North america. Help!!

The name, and origin of the airbourne seed that is totally round, white fluff that children make wishes on.?
milkweed and dandelion both produce the floating seeds...

the dandelion, related to chicory, sometimes blanched and used as a salad green, has a yellow, fully double flower, on a hollow stem the resembles a drinking straw.

when a dandelion flower is ripe, it is even;y covered with oblong seeds, each seed having a3/8 inch shaft and a perfect little parachute on top.

if they are picked carefully, the seeds will remain attached until the wishmaking child blows them off.

The sap of the dandelion, and other members of the family (of which lettuce is also a member) produce a bitter white latex that contains alkaloids similar to opium.

Reply:Arabic. That is what this German source in the link says.

But You may as well assume that it is Hebrew or Aramaic.

Names are often passed on in someones family so maybe ask around a little.

Arabic: that is not the same as Islamic. The area of Syria, Israel and e.g. Egypt had very sizable Christian and Jewish populations once. Islam is much younger %26amp; in the distant past there were more Christian than Islamic Arabs.

Arabic and Aramaic (was AFAIK the mother language of Jesus and of many Arabic Christians), Hebrew and Tigrinya are closely related Languages.

Names are old and do not change much with the languages but stay in their old form. The Semite languages drifted apart during their development ( all languages do, German and English were two dialects of the same language only 1000 years ago). Hebrew grew extinct as everyday language after the 6th century BCE %26amp; was only revived in the 19 century. So we do not really know whether it is Arabic or Aramaic or Hebrew. I assume that it was common to all.

What is the Hungarian origin/meaning of the name "Personey"?

I think the name was originally pronounced Par-shone-lee or Par-jone-lee. I have no idea what the spelling was. But an ancestor from Hungary came over and changed to name or it was changed for him.

What does it mean? Where in Hungary did it come from?

What is the Hungarian origin/meaning of the name "Personey"?
If it was originally a Hungarian name, it's been pretty thoroughly mangled. The -ee ending, which would be spelled -i or -y in a Hungarian name, suggests a locative byname, which is a byname based on the name of a place. (The suffix means 'from, of'.)

I'm not finding any likely places starting with P-vowel-r-sibilant, but if I assume the 'r' is an American addition, then you're not too far from Pozsonyi, which is pronounced roughly /PO-zho-nyee/, with /o/ like in 'go', /zh/ like the 's' in 'measure', and /ny/ like Spanish n-tilde. Pozsony is the Hungarian name of Bratislava.

Other possibilities: P枚sz枚nyi (from a village in Vas county), Pazonyi (from Ny铆rpazony, a place in Szabolcs-Szatm谩r county near Ny铆regyh谩za), Pereszl茅nyi (from a town in modern-day Slovakia), or maybe Peresznyei (from a place in Vas county).

I think you'll need to dig up some pre-immigration forms of the name to come up with anything more definite.

What is the origin of the name of the British sponge pudding called "Spotted Dick"?

Actually "Spotted Dick" is more a steamed fruit pudding, made with suet and filled with jam, and served with a custard sauce, here in Canada we have a native Newfoundland dish similar called "Figgy Duff" made similarly but with molasses, you can make it quite easily with a simple friutcake mix, and some added eggs and then rolling some raspberry jam in the middle, steaming it in a roast pan wrapped in foil and a piece of either parachment or saran wrap, and if you not into making custard now most stores sell a tinned English style one in the department were they sell puddings.

And that is the original name, it is from the early 1800's before Queen Victoria took the throne in 1845.

Does anyone know what the origin of my name is?

My name is Marynthia, but in some papers it is spelled Maryntia. I really would like to know where it comes from or what it means. Thanks!

Does anyone know what the origin of my name is?
It is possibly derived from the name Amarynthia, which is a name associated with the Greek goddess Artemis (the daughter of Zeus and Leto, twin of Apollo). She was worshiped as the goddess of the wilderness, wild animals and the hunt, one of the most widely revered of the Greek deities. The name Amarynthia became associated with Artemis because of a festival held in her honor at Amarynthus.

Marynthia might have came from Mary and Cynthia. Mary means like 'beloved' or ' love'. Cynthia means 'woman from Knythos'. Knythos was the mountain where mythical twins Artemis and Apollo were born. So together, Mary and Cynthia means 'beloved woman from Knythos'.

Marynthia might have also came from Mirinda or Miranda. Miranda means 'admirable'.

And if you have ever watched the movie 'Twitches', the twin witches who were separated from their mother at birth, were originally named Artemis and Apollo. And their real mother's name was Miranda.
Reply:It's possible that your parents just "made up" the name. I have friends who named thier daughter Mattica (after him-Matt %26amp; her-Monica). If this is the case for you then your origin would be as followed:

Mary-

Originally a Middle English Anglicized form of the French Marie, derived from Latin Maria, and ultimately from the Hebrew name of uncertain origin "Miryam". This is the New Testament form of Miriam, which St. Jerome derives from elements meaning 'drop of the sea' (Latin 'stilla maris', later altered by folk etymology to 'stella maris': star of the sea). Mary was the name of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, who has been a subject of cult from earliest times. As the name of the Blessed Virgin, Mary was at first considered too holy for ordinary use. Its use began in England in the 12th century, and by the 16th century was the most frequently used name for girls.

What is the meaning/origin of the last name Applegate?
UK answer

Surname: Applegate

Recorded in the spellings of Applegate, Applegarth and Applegath, this is an English locational surname. It originates from the villages of Applegarth found in East Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and Cumberland, or from residence by an apple orchard. The derivation is from the pre 7th century Olde Norse-Viking "apladr-garor", the villages all being in areas under Viking control from the 7th to the 11th centuries a.d. Locational surnames were by their nature given either to the lord of the manor and his descendanmts, or to former villagers who moved to an other area. It was in medieval times, and to some extent it remains so today, that the easiest form of identification for a "stranger" is to call him or her by the name of the place from whence they came. The earliest of all recordings is that of William de Apelgart, in the register of the abbey of St Edmunds, Suffolk, about as far away as he could get from his original home. Later recordings which almost certainly relate to the lord of the manor include those of Robert Applegarth, in the Hundred Rolls of Yorkshire in the year 1279, whilst Richard de Appelgarthe is recorded in the 1279 accounts of the Duchy of Cornwall, again in Yorkshire. It is not clear when the spelling as Applegate is first recorded, however an example is that of Robert Applegate who married Mary Crouch at St George's Chapel, Hanover Square, London, in the year 1760.
Reply:Applegate

What is the meaning and origin behind the last name Deimel?

Deimel.

It's my cousin's last name. What she knows is that its of German and possibly Jewish descent. Only ONE site has confirmed this somehow, saying its from Southern Germany.

All records we've found are before 1940s, so I'm blaming all lack of information on WWII.

Now, all joking aside, the hell does it mean and/or originated from?!

What is the meaning and origin behind the last name Deimel?
Deimel is, in fact, Jewish in origin. Its most common dispersion as a surname was in Germany, but it can also be found, historically, within the UK, Ireland, Australia, and of course the US. I also found records of immigrants from Russia to the US bearing the name.

Deimel is thought to be a derivative of Daum, which was a German/Jewish nickname for a small person. That is the only information I could find. Hope I helped!
Reply:South German: of uncertain derivation; possibly related to Daum.

well, here's an interesting article re a person of the name, who seems well connected to Hawaii (supporting the prior answer). If YOUR line also connects to Hawaii, I'd make some effort to find this guy and chat with him.

However, the point that I normally work to explain is that it can be misleading to assume a name comes from any one place. The gentleman in Hawaii might have a gr gr grandfather who came from Italy, or %26lt;fill in the blank%26gt;.

The most reliable way that I know of, is to step back from where a name "originally" comes from (since it is often debatable) and focus on verifying where your ancestor of that name was actually born.
Reply:Alfiche in our line comes from the Basque (to spain to Phillipines to Hawa`i). Report Abuse

Reply:The 1930 census has 11 people named Alfiche and they were born in Honolulu.

The New York Passenger list 1820-1957 has a Pasqualina Alfiche born in Italy abt 1865. Arrival date December 20, 1914

The California Passenger List 1893 1957 has 4, no place of residence but they left the Port or Honolulu.

Don't know if they spelled it that way in Italian. The ch in Italian is pronouced like a k in English. I think it would be like al FLE kay. It might have been spelled Alflice and that would be pronouced Al FLE chay.

What is the meaning and origin of the name Ashia?

Ashia: Female Lively Arabic

The girl's name Ashia \a-shia\ is pronounced ah-SHEE-ah. It is of Arabic origin, and its meaning is "life and hope". Hindi name. Mythology: the name of the wife of a Hindu demi-god.
Reply:While the first person who answered is correct about the name Aisha (my name is Aesha), Aisha and Ashia are two different names (as you know!). Ashia is African; its origin is Arabic (as is Aisha) and it means "hope".
Reply:Is is spelled Ashia or is that just how it's pronounced? Because there is a name Asia (pronounced Ashia) in Polish. Asia is short for Joasia which is a nickname of Joanna.

My mother's name is Joanna and all Polish speaking people call her Ashia.

I looked up the name with the spelling you asked for on this website and they didn't have it, but they did have alot of similar names such as the Polish Asia I said and Aisha in Arabic.

Here's the link:

She was the whe wife of a Hindu demigod.

The name comes from Somalia.

*Katie: The question is for the name ASHIA, not AISHA.
Reply:The girl's name Aisha \a(i)-sha\ is pronounced ah-EE-shah, AY-shah. It is of Arabic origin, and its meaning is "alive and well". Aisha was the favorite wife of the prophet Muhammad. The name is also linked to the moon goddess. Use in the English-speaking world is recent and many variants have been created from this name due to its pleasing sounds.

Anyone know the origin of the name Gunderson?

I have been told german, norwegian, and swedish before but I would like to know a more definate answer than a maybe. just curious. please help.

Anyone know the origin of the name Gunderson?
It is Danish, That name is in my family tree, Which has been traced back to Europe. In the 1600's my ancestors left Scandinavia for what would become America.
Reply:it comes from gunderdad
Reply:You probably already figured out it means the son of Gunder.

Gunder (spelled this way) is a a (not common, but not all that unusual) Swedish name, or a Norwegian one. It's a little old fashioned, not something most people would use these days, sort of like "Harry" or "Walter" maybe, in English. It's very old though, like those names, and has been around a long time.

It's _probably_ Norwegian, based on spelling; Norwegian names tend to have the suffix -son, Swedish names -sson, Danish names -sen. It's unlikely to be german, because the German spelling for the name would be with a t instead of a d.

However, in reality, it could easily be from any of these places. They often all got changed when people immigrated to english speaking countries, as people tried to simplify their names or had them written down phonetically by an immigrationagent. There's very many Anderson's of Swedish descent, for instance, even though Anderson and Andersson actually have slightly different pronunciation. There's also plenty of them who simply had a Norwegian grandfather, so the -s vs -ss -vs -se rule is certainly not hard evidence, just a clue.

So my guess: Most likely Norwegian or Swedish, entirely possibly German or Danish.
Reply:It is not primarily Danish. Primary origin of the name is Norway, Sweden, Germany, and then Denmark.
Reply:I GO WITH SCOTT, SOUNDS RIGHT TO ME
Reply:based soley on the name itself, i would assume that it is derived from the words Gunter's Son. Gunter is a very common name in germany, and gunter is another word for gunner, or soldier, so it would be fairly safe to say that it is a german name for either Soldier's Son or Son of a Gun!

What is nitrogens name origin and who discovered it and when was it descovered and what is its uses?

What is nitrogens name origin and who discovered it and when was it descovered and what is its uses?
nitrogen (nī'trəjən) , gaseous chemical element; symbol N; at. no. 7; at. wt. 14.0067; m.p. −209.86°C; b.p. −195.8°C; density 1.25 grams per liter at STP; valence principally −3, +3, or +5. Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless diatomic gas. It is found in Group 15 of the periodic table. It does not burn, does not support combustion, and is only slightly soluble in water. It is relatively inactive chemically, but many of its compounds display marked reactivity. At high temperatures it reacts with some of the other elements to form nitrides.

Nitrogen has several oxides. Nitrous oxide, N2O, is a gas used as an anesthetic; it is often called laughing gas. Nitric oxide, NO, is a gas used in the manufacture of sulfuric acid; in air it forms nitrogen dioxide, NO2, a poisonous reddish brown gas. Nitrogen trioxide, N2O3, is unstable at ordinary temperatures. Nitrogen pentoxide, N2O5, forms nitric acid when dissolved in water. Important compounds of nitrogen include nitric acid, ammonia, many explosives, cyanides, fertilizers, and the proteins. Many organic compounds contain nitrogen.

Nitrogen for industrial use is produced largely by the fractional distillation of liquid air. Nitrogen is used to some extent for filling light bulbs, in thermometers, and generally anywhere a relatively inert atmosphere is needed, as in the production of electronic parts such as transistors, diodes, and integrated circuits, and in food storage packaging to prevent spoilage. It is used in the manufacture of stainless steel and as a coolant for the immersion freezing of food products, for the transportation of foods, for the preservation of bodies and reproductive cells (sperm and eggs), and for the storage of biological samples. However, the chief importance of the element lies in its compounds, among them ammonia, nitric acid, and cyanide.

The expression “nitrogen fixation” refers to the extraction of the element from the atmosphere by its combination with other elements to form compounds. This is accomplished commercially in several ways. In the Haber process, nitrogen is reacted with hydrogen to form ammonia; in the cyanamide process, nitrogen is reacted with calcium carbide at high temperatures to form calcium cyanamide; in the arc process, nitrogen is reacted with oxygen in an electric arc to form nitrogen oxides.

Nitrogen is abundant in the atmosphere; it is about 78% (by volume) of dry air. Nitrogen is present in living things; it and its compounds are necessary for the continuation of life (see nitrogen cycle). Nitrogen also is found in foods and is important in the human diet.

Nitrogen compounds were known to alchemists as early as the Middle Ages, but nitrogen is formally considered to have been discovered by Daniel Rutherford in 1772, who called it noxious air or phlogisticated air (air from which the oxygen had been removed, usually by combustion). Nitrogen was also studied at about the same time by Carl Wilhelm Scheele, Henry Cavendish, and Joseph Priestley, who referred to it as burnt air or dephlogisticated air. It was well known to these late 18th century chemists that there was a fraction of air that did not support combustion. Antoine Lavoisier was the first to treat oxygenless air as a separate element, which he called azote, meaning without life. The term nitrogen was first used by J. A. Chaptal in 1790. This early “nitrogen” was later shown by John Strutt (Lord Rayleigh), and William Ramsay to contain argon; Henry Cavendish had shown in 1785 that there was an unreactive gas other than nitrogen present in air.

First answer is good

Within any calendar year, no other month begins on the same day of the week as May.

May's birthstone is the emerald.

No President of the United States has ever died in May, and May is the only month with this property.

What's the origin of the unofficial name, Oscar, for the academy awards statuette?

Where did the name Oscar come from in 1939, is it a director, actor or just a chance name for the statuette?

What's the origin of the unofficial name, Oscar, for the academy awards statuette?
During her acceptance speech some actress ( Bette Davis I think ) picked up the statue and said it looked like her first husband Oscar. The name obviously stuck.

What is the ancestral origin of the name Swinamer?

And please don't say Nova Scotia.

What is the ancestral origin of the name Swinamer?
Technically, you won't like it but the name Swinamer itself PROBABLY is limited to Nova Scotia, which you did not want to hear.

that is, if you limit to the name and that spelling. And the indication when you run into this.. often suggests that it is not the original name. Sure enough, going through files at rootsweb, someone has worked it to find that the persons were originally named Sweinhammer. Now, taking that over to familysearch.org, and looking at one of the persons with this name in 1881 (in Nova Scotia), he indeed says his ethnic origin is German. Oh.. that would be George, born in 1825. Mind you.. Germany is not his place of birth, that is NS.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/...

You may also want to talk to this submitter, who has worked it back, to another variation, this time Schweinheimer.

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th...

And this lady is also working it, and seems to have record of when they sailed from Europe.

She may have more details since then. Germany is correct.
Reply:I believe it is German. If you're persistent, you can search through Ancestry.com. You'll find several German ancestors by that name, but most of what's there is listed as Nova Scotia. If you're REALLY motivated, start tracking birth certificates. The mother and father's place of birth is usually listed on them. Go back far enough and you should be able to find the European country of origin for a specific person.

What is the origin of the name "Hufflepuff" in the Harry Potter saga?

I know that each name in the saga has a related meaning but, not being a native English speaker, I have not been able to find out what "Hufflepuff" should mean.

What is the origin of the name "Hufflepuff" in the Harry Potter saga?
i read one site that suggested hufflepuff could be derived from two words huff (to breathe) and puff (type of pastry) so their theory is that it means to exude sweetness since the sorting hat talks about the founder of that house being good or sweet.

p.s. any other harry potter questions feel free to ask I have read every book 20+ times and any other resources i could get my hands on.

Origin of name Daniel is it Assyrian or Hebrew name?

I read in internet that its originally (Daniyyel) meaning "God is my judge".

but some people say its not Hebrew , its Assyrian,

which one is the right origin?? and WHY? any source I can read?

Origin of name Daniel is it Assyrian or Hebrew name?
Daniel is a Hebrew name- דניאל

It is consisted of the words "dani" (judges me) and "el" (god)- "god judges me", or more commonly translated as "judged by god".

Daniel was a Hebrew prophet.
Reply:Daniel is Hebrew. He was given a Babylonian name but I will have to look for it.

O.K. his Babylonian name was Belteshazzar. (Dan 1:7)

Daniel is definitely Hebrew, whoever told you different told you wrong. He was given his Babylonian name after he was taken into Babylonian captivity. The Assyrians took the northern tribes into captivity several years before this so its not even logical that he would have had an Assyrian name.
Reply:The first 3 sources below all state that the name is Hebrew, in origin. Don't know how authoritative they are, but they are consistent.

The last source lists several other sources that claim "Daniel" is Hebrew. Hope this helps.
Reply:Uhh. . im not sure, im not really familiar with hebrew names. . .

What is the origin of the last name Severson?

My Grandmother's maiden name is that. I think this name is name is a Americanization of Sivertsen or Sivertson which is Scandinavian, Icelandic. I already know it's english or irish. Tell me what do you think, Help!!

What is the origin of the last name Severson?
Severson is not a name with an origin in England or Ireland, that is not to say that someone of that name was not born in England or Ireland, it does mean that someone in their ancestry most likely came from Scandinavia or, just possibly, Germany.

Severson

Last name origin %26amp; meaning:

Probably an Americanized form of Scandinavian Sivertsen or Sivertson or of German Sievertsen, patronymic of Sievert.

Edit: I have just made a search for any Severson's in Britain today, excluding the Irish Republic, and I have found just one entry, so I think it is fairly conclusively not an "English" name, I also searched for Seversen as a variant and there are none at all. I would also bet that there are none in the Irish Republic either.
Reply:the only way is to use records, which will tell you where Grandma's family comes from. That is what I did.. looked at people with that name, in the 1900 census. SOME come from Norway, or Sweden. Others have been in the US since the early 1800s, born in NY or elsewhere.

There is no reason for guessing, in genealogy. All that is needed is to find grandma in the census, find her parents, and where they came from. Certain persons will have their immigration records available from ancestry.com, which, if her parents are among those.. you can probably find the name of the TOWN where they were born.

What you are doing is the most common error that we have here. What anyone "thinks" about where names come from, is confusing name origins with ancestry origins. If a person with a certain name has parents from Ireland, then the person is Irish. Someone else can have exactly the same name, but their parents were born in Germany. Or Denmark.

If you want to post grandma's name (if she is not living), or the names of her parents.. then someone with ancestry can look it up for you and get the real answer.
Reply:Certainly Scandinavian, corruption of Silversen.
Reply:sounds swedish.
