What is the origin of the Davis name in American %26amp;/or World history ?
Since there were no Indians named Davis, the origins of the name are outside of the Americas.

Ancestry says this; note that "patronymic" means named for your father, so "Davis" is a corruption of "David's Son". Note also that many, many non-English persons who came to the US changed how they spelled their name or had it changed, so even if someone's surname is Davis now, his/her immigrant ancestor may not have been English.

Here's the Ancestry entry:

davis

Southern English: patronymic from David.

and

David

The US Census (link 2) says Davis is the 6th most popular name in the USA, which hints that they came from a lot of places and a number of non-English immigrants ended up with the "Davis" surname, regardless of how they spelled it in the old country.
Reply:The link may help a little. Good luck.
