What does my last name mean and what is its origin?

My last name is Batteiger and I have looked everywhere for its meaning and place of origin but I can't find anything on it. If someone could please tell me I would be so happy.

It does not give a meaning. The origin and meaning of a name is not important in genealogy as the same surname can come from many different countries. The best way to know your heritage is to trace your family starting with your parents and work back. Anytime you wish to do this there are lots of people on this board that can give you some great ideas. Just ask.





Rootsweb(free site) has 193 entries in family trees for Batteiger. Now, don't take everything as fact what you see in family trees on websites as most is not documented or poorly documented. Even if you see the same information by many different submitters, a lot of copying is being done. All too frequently people are copying errors.





Put Rootsweb in your search engine and then put Batteiger in the World Connect Block. If you see anything that interest you, you can probe a name and it will take you to a screen with the name and email address of the submitter. Some submitters might not know anything as the Batteiger they have just might be someone who married into their family, but no doubt some will.

Reply:From what little I could find (on www.ancestry.com; and www.familysearch.org), your ancestors came from the areas of GERMANY, SWITZERLAND, and BAVARIA (another part of Germany now). I couldn't find out the meaning of the name, however. From the listings at ancestry.com, it looks like 6 different ships carried your ancestors from Europe to the US (I have listed the names, approximate birthdates, arrival dates, etc. below:
