Can someone explain the origin of my last name?

My last name is Castillo and when I search it up it said that it was it was French Irish and Spanish. Does anyone know more about this?

Can someone explain the origin of my last name?
Castillo Name Meaning and History

Spanish: from castillo 鈥榗astle鈥? 鈥榝ortified building鈥?(Latin castellum), a habitational name from any of numerous places so named or named with this word.

Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-508137-4

The Irish don't speak Spanish. It is a common name, and there is undoubtedly at least one person born in Ireland named "Castillo", and another in France but their ancestors came from Spain at some time.

YOUR ancestors,on the other hand, may have come from anywhere. You have 16 great great grandparents, only one of them a Castillo. (Probably. It's common, and some of your GGGP's may have been related before they married.)

As a second note, it doesn't mean your Castillo ancestors owned the castle. They could have worked there, as anything from Chief Steward (a sort of CEO) to stable hand.
Reply:Without knowing more about your heritage and the introduction of the name into your family, you'll have to go off of the word-origin.

Used as a surname and understanding the spanish language, it is similar "Thatcher" or "Carpenter". The name literally means the life-station in the origin in time.

In this case, Castillo is not the building itself, but the station of dwelling in and around a castle, or working in a castle.

Spanish, in origin, may indicate a previous male ancestor who was from a Spanish family (originating in Spain).
Reply:I am sorry, but this is also what I come up with - see link. Names like this (meaning "castle" etc) are bound to be very old and therefore could have spread very far in the world over the many centuries.

My best bet is that it is most likely to originate from southern France / Spain originally, but you may find that you need to go back quite a few generations outside France or Spain to come to the real root of your name!

I'm not sure about the Irish link, but there have been people movements from France to Ireland...
Reply:Although Castillo is Spanish in origin there are many Castillo families in Ireland. From what I've read several Spanish families fled Spain during the Spanish Inquisition and came to Ireland and have been there for 100's of years.

Other then that i've only heard of it being of spanish decent.
Reply:Sounds Spanish and similar to Castille, the section of Spain that joined with Aragon to become Spain when Ferdinand and Isabella married.

Think it means Castle.
Reply:sounds spanish or itialian
