Outside Preston in Lancashire there is a little place called Nog Tow. Does anyone know the origin of the name?

If no one knows the origin, has anyone any ideas how I might go about finding out?

Nog is an old English dialect word (from East Anglia) of obscure origins that was used to describe a kind of strong beer (hence noggin)

Tow is an Old English word meaning white/flaxen.

I don't know if that means that the two put together is really the meaning of this name, or if there is a more exact, historical meaning.

I used google, searched word meanings... Old English Nog and Tow
Reply:According to web sites about Lancashire area, Nog Tow has existed for close to 200 years. The word Tow in the name could be a reference to a boat being towed along a canal or a river nearby, which ws not uncommon those days.
