What is the origin of the name "Boston" in reference to Boston, Mass?

Boston, England. Tradition has it that the place came to be called "Botolphston" 鈥?either from "Botolph's stone" or "Botolph's town" 鈥?which was later contracted to "Boston."

What is the origin of the name "Boston" in reference to Boston, Mass?
My guess is it was probably named for Boston, England or a settler in early New England/Massachusetts. I know the state is named for a Native American tribe.. This link provides little information, except to speculate as we're doing. Good luck.
