What is the origin of the name of the city of Baltimore?

I've heard that it comes from the Gaelic. And alhough I can believe it, (for the source is trustworthy). And yet, having studied Irish Gaelic recently (in the last few years) when I tried to discover why a major American city would have gotten its name from a group of peope who came to AMerica in large numbers. I think that it would have been odd to name sucha city, that had existed here in America long beforetthe influence of the Irish arrived only later.

What is the origin of the name of the city of Baltimore?
I believe it comes from Lord Baltimore who was granted the territory of Maryland. He served as the first governor of the colony or something to that effect. Also interesting is that Maryland, under the ownership of Lord Baltimore, was intended and granted to him as a refuge for Catholics. He was Catholic himself. Catholics were being persecuted in England at the time, but a few noble lords who remained Catholic like Lord Baltimore were still in favor with the King, and received favors. The first Catholic Diocese in the U.S. other than the former Spanish territories, was established here in Maryland. This is also why Georgetown Univeristy ended up being founded in Maryland by the Jesuits.
