I have a great-great-great grandfather name Lemuel McMichael. He looks like he may be hipsanic but no one knows, so I wanted to look more into his name. I know the last name is Irish but what is his first name and what did it mean? I am just trying to find out what nationality he was.
What is the origin of the name Lemuel? Is it a Spanish name?
sounds french to me
Reply:yup hebrew, kind of biblical name, but it don't meant he is jew, almost the entire world names come from the bible,
Reply:Hebrew variation of Samuel. Doesn't mean he necessarily had any Jewish heritage. Back 100 years or more ago a lot of Christians gave their children Old Testament names.
Reply:Hebrew. This is a biblical name.
Reply:I'd agree with the others in that Lemuel is a Biblical name of hebrew origin. It was quite common in the 17 and 1800's for folks to choose biblical names for their children. The last name McMichael is deffinately Irish,Scotch or English.
Reply:Hebrew

Lemuel
Biblical name (possibly meaning “"devoted to God"” in Hebrew) borne by an obscure king who was lectured by his mother on the perils of strong drink and the virtues of a dutiful wife (Proverbs 31). He is mentioned by Chaucer in "The Canterbury Tales", where his name is carefully distinguished from the more familiar Samuel. Lemuel Gulliver was the unusual name of the hero of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels (1726).
www.behindthename.com says a possible nickname is LEMMY.
By the way, according to ancestry.com, this is the
McMichael Name Meaning and History
Scottish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Micheil (probably earlier Mac Gille Mhicheil), a patronymic from a Gaelic form of the personal name Michael. (I believe the Mac/Mc means "son of". So, you see it is SCOTTISH, not Irish.
